Essential tips for travelling to Milford Sound this winter

If you’re planning a trip to the stunning Milford Sound between June and November, there’s one winter essential you can’t afford to overlook: snow chains. Whether you’re a seasoned Kiwi road-tripper or a first-time visitor, understanding the rules and practicalities around snow chains could make all the difference to your journey and your safety.
Why snow chains are a must?
Milford Road (SH94) is famous for its breathtaking scenery, but come winter, it’s equally renowned for its challenging driving conditions. Heavy snow, ice, and even avalanches are not uncommon, and the weather can change in a flash.
For this reason, it’s a legal requirement for all vehicles travelling between Te Anau and Milford Sound to carry snow chains from June through November, regardless of the forecast.
Failing to carry chains can land you with a hefty fine (up to $750), and more importantly, put you and others at risk. Road checks are frequent, and you may be turned back if you’re not properly equipped.

Where and how to get snow chains?
If you’re hiring a car from us, we provide snow chains for hire and will show you how to fit them to your vehicle.
If you’re bringing your own wheels, you can hire or purchase chains in Te Anau or Queenstown. Don’t wait until you reach the snow, supplies can be limited during peak times.
Top tip: Practise fitting your chains before you set off. There’s nothing worse than fumbling with cold fingers on the side of the road in a blizzard!
When and how to use snow chains?
- Only fit chains when instructed by road signs or when snow/ice is present. Never drive with chains on bare tarmac, as it can damage both your tyres and the road.
- Fit chains to the drive wheels: That’s the front wheels for front-wheel drive, rear wheels for rear-wheel drive, and ideally all four wheels for 4WD or AWD vehicles. If you only have one pair of chains for a 4WD or AWD, check your vehicle’s manual to see whether they should be fitted to the front or rear wheels.
- Drive slowly and steadily: Keep your speed below 30 km/h, avoid sudden acceleration or braking, and check the chains after a short distance to ensure they’re still tight.
- Remove chains as soon as you’re back on clear roads.
Stay informed and safe
Before you leave, check the latest road conditions and weather forecasts. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) website and local radio stations provide up-to-date information. There are also electronic signs along the Milford Road indicating when chains must be fitted.
If you’re not confident with winter driving or chain fitting, consider booking a coach tour to Milford Sound. It’s a stress-free way to enjoy the scenery without the worry.
Keep an eye out for the mischievous kea near the Homer Tunnel. These clever alpine parrots are known for their curious antics, including moving road cones to get attention. While they’re a beloved part of the Fiordland experience, please don’t feed them and take care when driving in their habitat.
A bit of preparation goes a long way. Carrying snow chains (and knowing how to use them) isn’t just about ticking a legal box, it’s about keeping yourself and others safe while enjoying one of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations. So before you hit the road this winter, make sure you’re ready for whatever Fiordland throws your way.
