How to fit snow chains on your wheels: A South Island guide

Driving in the South Island during winter can be challenging, especially on alpine and high country roads where snow and ice are common. Snow chains are essential for maintaining traction and safety in these conditions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to fitting snow chains, with special attention to South Island requirements and best practices.
Why are snow chains important in the South Island?
Snow chains dramatically improve traction on snow and ice, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring you can safely navigate winter roads. In many South Island alpine areas, snow chains are strongly recommended, and in some places, legally required.
Where are snow chains required in the South Island?
Milford Road (SH94):
It is a legal requirement for all vehicles travelling between Te Anau and Milford Sound to carry snow chains from June through November, regardless of the forecast.

Authorities conduct regular checks, and fines apply if you do not have chains. Only fit chains when instructed by road signs or when snow or ice is present.
Queenstown and the Lakes District:
You must carry snow chains if directed by authorities, especially on roads to ski fields.
Fines of NZD150 apply if you do not have chains when required. Ski field operators may also require chains as a condition of entry.

Other Alpine Roads:
Arthur’s Pass (SH73), Lindis Pass (SH8), Crown Range Road, Porters Pass (SH73), and Burkes Pass (SH8):
Chains become mandatory when snow or ice is present or when directed by authorities. Always check road conditions before you travel. Ignoring these requirements can result in fines or being turned back by authorities.
Step-by-Step: Fitting snow chains?
What You’ll Need
– Correctly sized snow chains for your vehicle’s tyres.
– A flat, safe area to park off the road.
– A torch or headlamp (for fitting chains in low light).
Please note:
This guide is for demonstration and educational purposes. Snow chains should only be fitted and used on snow or ice, as directed by road signs and authorities. Do not use snow chains on clear roads; doing so can cause damage to your vehicle and the road surface.
1. Park safely
Find a flat, safe spot off the road.
Engage your parking brake and turn off the engine.
2. Prepare the chains
Lay the chains out flat and untangle them.
Check that all hooks and fasteners are in good condition.

Lay the snow chains flat on the ground behind the tyre.
Carefully pull the chains up and over the tyre, bringing both ends together at the top.
Fasten them securely so the chain is centred and evenly distributed over the tread.
4. Connect the chains
Secure the inside fastener first, then the outside.
Pull the chain tight and fasten any tensioners or adjusters.

Make sure the entire set of chains is properly positioned:
The inside fastener should be as close as possible to the inner side of the tyre, and the outside fastener should be positioned at the level between the side of the tyre and the alloy wheel.
5. Tighten and check
Use tensioners to remove slack.
Drive forward a short distance (10–15 metres), then stop and recheck the chains for tightness.
6. Drive Cautiously
Keep your speed under 40 km/h when using chains.
Remove chains as soon as you’re back on clear roads to prevent damage.
Please note:
Different snow chains may require different fitting methods. If you’re using a rental vehicle, ask the rental company for instructions on how to fit the chains. If you have your own chains, read and study the manual before fitting them.
