Your Guide to Safe Winter Driving in the South Island
As the calendar turns to May, the Southern Alps begin to get their first proper dusting of snow. While it makes for a stunning backdrop to your road trip, it also means road conditions are starting to change.
We want you to enjoy every moment of your journey safely. If you’re planning to head out from Christchurch, here is everything you need to know about navigating our winter roads like a local.
1. Respect the “Black Ice”
In May, we start to see “black ice”, a thin, transparent layer of ice on the road that is nearly impossible to see. It’s most common in shaded areas, under overpasses, and on bridges during the early morning or late evening.
The Tip: If the road looks wet but isn’t “spraying” from the cars in front of you, treat it as ice. Ease off the accelerator and avoid any sudden braking.

2. Know Your Passes
If your itinerary includes driving between Christchurch and the West Coast or heading down to Queenstown, you’ll likely cross one of our famous alpine passes: Arthur’s Pass, Lewis Pass, or the Lindis Pass.
These areas can experience rapid weather changes. Before you set off, it’s a good habit to check the NZTA (Waka Kotahi) Road Planner for any delays or “Chains Required” warnings.
3. Snow Chains: Don’t Leave Without Them
In the South Island, carrying snow chains isn’t just a good idea on many alpine roads in winter; it’s a legal requirement.
Practice Makes Perfect: If you’ve never fitted chains before, don’t worry! Ask our friendly team for a quick demonstration when you pick up your car. It’s much better to learn in our dry Christchurch yard than on the side of a snowy mountain!

4. Choose the Right Tool for the Job
