When winter rolls around in the Southern Hemisphere, there’s no place on earth quite like the South Island. August brings the peak of the winter season; the snow base across the Southern Alps is deep, the weather delivers crisp “bluebird” days, and the mountains are buzzing.

If you’re keen on a proper alpine road trip that covers the best skiing between Christchurch and Queenstown without leaving you completely shattered, this 8-day ski safari hits the absolute sweet spot. By staying at classic on-mountain lodges and iconic ski towns along the way, you’ll spend less time behind the wheel and more time carving up fresh powder.

Throw your winter woollies in the back, strap your skis or board to the roof, and hit the road for the ultimate winter adventure.

Essential August Road Trip Tips

Brilliant Rentals Car Hire Rent a Car Christchurch Airport Queenstown Airport NZ

  • Snow Chains: Always carry fitted snow chains in your boot. Access roads to ski fields can require chains at a moment’s notice during August snowfall.
  • Check the Reports: Mountain weather can change quickly. Check the daily snow reports for Porters, Mt Hutt, Ohau, Cardrona, and the Queenstown fields every morning before heading off.
  • Take Care on the Passes: The Crown Range Road and Lindis Pass can freeze in shaded areas. Drive at a comfortable pace and keep headlights on for safety.
