Day 1: Touchdown in Christchurch & Head for the Hills
Drive: Christchurch Airport to Porters Lodge (~1 hr 15 mins)
Highlight: Evening fire & feast at the lodge
Land in Christchurch, collect your road trip vehicle, and immediately trade the city streets for the open alpine highway. Heading west on State Highway 73 towards the Craigieburn Range, the Canterbury Plains quickly give way to towering snow-capped peaks.
Your destination for the first two nights is Porters Lodge, nestled right at the base of Porters Alpine Resort. Originally an authentic ski club lodge, it offers warm, cosy rooms, a roaring log fire, and a fantastic on-site restaurant and bar. Settle in with a local draft beer, enjoy a hearty dinner, and soak up the traditional mountain atmosphere.
Day 2: First Tracks & Uncrowded Powder at Porters
Ski Spot: Porters Alpine Resort
Highlight: Wide-open groomed trails & no lift queues
Wake up right at the foot of the mountain! Porters is famous among locals for having some of the best groomed runs and uncrowded slopes in Canterbury. It’s the closest ski field to Christchurch, but because you’re staying right on the mountain, you’ll beat any day-trippers to the lift.
Spend the day exploring the massive natural bowl and wide-open intermediate trails. Intermediate and advanced skiers can tackle the Big Mama or Bluff Face runs for some serious vertical. When the lifts close at 4:00 PM, head straight back down to the lodge for another relaxed evening by the fire.

Day 3: Big Mountain Carving at Mt Hutt
Drive: Porters to Mt Hutt (~1 hr 40 mins) ➔ Night in Methven

After a full day on the slopes, cruise down the mountain into Methven, a lively rural alpine village. Check into your accommodation and head to the famous Blue Pub or Brown Pub for an authentic Kiwi après-ski meal.

Day 4: High Country Scenery & The Mt Cook Detour
Drive: Methven ➔ Aoraki/Mt Cook ➔ Lake Ōhau (~4 hrs15mins total driving)
Highlight: Stand face-to-face with New Zealand’s highest peak
Set your alarm early today! Leaving Methven by 8:00 AM gives you plenty of daylight to experience one of the most picturesque scenic drives in the country.
Head south along State Highway 8 past the shimmering turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. Take the scenic turn-off to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. Stroll the easy Hooker Valley track for incredible photo ops of New Zealand’s tallest mountain wrapped in deep winter snow.
By mid-afternoon, double back down the lake and wind your way to Lake Ōhau Lodge, perched on the shores of Lake Ōhau.
Pro Tip: The sun sets early behind the mountains in August. Plan to arrive at Lake Ōhau Lodge before 5:00 PM to avoid driving the gravel access road in the dark when black ice can form.

Day 5: Pure Alpine Magic at Ōhau Snow Fields
Ski Spot: Ōhau Snow Fields
Highlight: The legendary communal dinner party at Lake Ōhau Lodge
Ōhau is a hidden gem that steals the heart of every skier who visits. It offers a genuine, old-school Kiwi ski field experience with sweeping, uncrowded terrain and incredible off-piste hiking along the ridgeline for powder hounds.
From the top chairlift, you’ll get unbelievable views back over Lake Ōhau and up towards Mt Cook. After an incredible day on the mountain, head down to the lodge for their famous three-course communal dinner. Day 6: The Lindis Pass Cruise to Queenstown
Drive: Lake Ōhau to Queenstown via Lindis Pass (~2 hrs 45 mins)

Take a slow start to the morning, enjoying a late breakfast while watching the morning sun hit the lake. Today is a dedicated transition and recovery day for your legs!
Load up the car and drive south over the dramatic Lindis Pass, a high-altitude mountain road that looks like a gold-tinted winter wonderland in August. Arrive in Queenstown by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day browsing the boutique shops along the waterfront, grabbing a world-famous Fergburger, or taking a scenic stroll along the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
Day 7: Alpine Progression at Cardrona
Drive: Queenstown to Cardrona Alpine Resort (~1 hr 15mins)
Highlight: Riding the Chondola and world-class terrain parks
Head over the dramatic Crown Range Road (New Zealand’s highest paved main road) towards Cardrona Alpine Resort. Cardrona is widely known for wide, forgiving groomers, excellent beginner and intermediate terrain, and world-class terrain parks where you might spot Olympic athletes training.
Ride the “Chondola” (combined chairlift and gondola) up the mountain and spend the day lapping the wide terrain bowls. On the drive back down to Queenstown, stop at the historic Cardrona Hotel for a hot mulled wine in their snow-dusted beer garden.

Day 8: The Grand Finale: Remarkables & Night Skiing

If your eighth day lands on a Wednesday or Friday, Coronet Peak runs its famous Night Skiing! Head down from the Remarkables in the mid-afternoon, grab a hearty early dinner in town, and head up Coronet Peak from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Skiing under giant floodlights with music pumping and DJ sets on the deck is the ultimate way to wrap up an epic 8-day South Island ski safari.
